ARM joins Compute Express Link Consortium

After the recent news where AMD joined the consortium of new interconnect link called CXL, its now ARM’s turn to join the growing members which include behemoths like Intel, Alibaba, Microsoft, Facebook etc.

what is interconnect link / bus?

It  is a high-speed CPU-to-Device and CPU-to-Memory interconnect designed to accelerate data center performance. It allows high speed connection between compute units like CPU and GPU in server segment with high bandwidth.

Before this every manufacturer has its own implementation like AMD had hypertrasport, Intel had quickpath, Nvidia has NVlink etc. This however has some problem where one interconnect could not work with other unless their hardware is used or license fee is paid.

CXL is designed to be an industry open standard interface for high-speed communications, as accelerators are increasingly used to complement CPUs in support of emerging applications such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and thus anyone can use this specification.
