Nintendo hints at 3DS Slow Death

Nintendo’s 3DS days are over. After the launch of Switch March 2017 and the recent launch of Switch Lite, the writing was on the wall that Nintendo’s handheld device the 3DS after 8 years of service would probably die. But Nintendo kept on affirming its commitment by adding new software library to 3DS. This changes as in Nintendo’s 6 month earning report it has clarified that no new titles will be released for 3DS.

The message is cryptic at best and here is the quote

For 3DS family, we will continue to fully utilize the platform’s rich software library to appeal to consumers purchasing game hardware for the first time, while continuing to drive sales of evergreen titles that leverage the hardware install base.

This in simple terms means that 3DS will appeal to new users due to existing large library and the sales will be basically due to evergreen title. Thus no new major game release will come from Nintendo itself.

Nintendo 3DS succeeded its predecessor Nintendo DS which still is the best selling console whether in the handheld category or overall console as a whole. The initial 3DS launched in 2011 which brought the 3D stereoscopy fad to handheld device without requiring any glasses. Using ARM CPU and a GPU by Pica, the console was had a larger variant called 3DS XL launched in 2012 which sported bigger screen size and battery.

A cheaper version was also launched which removed the 3D stereoscopy feature in 2013. This also had a larger variant called 2DS XL launched in 2017. Nintendo 3DS has amassed more than 75 million sales.
