Nvidia Caves in- G-Sync Monitors will support AMD GPU
Holy grail of tear free gaming was heralded by Nvidia 6 years back by introducing G-Sync monitors which would sync frames from Nvidia GPU with Nvidia certified monitors. But if you see the pattern, this only works with Nvidia Hardware only.
This now supposedly changes as TFT Central has confirmed that future G-Sync monitors will support HDMI-VRR and Adaptive Sync over HDMI and DisplayPort. Since these are open stnadrds, this effectively means that AMD GPU will be supported in future G-sync monitors.
But why the change of heart?
G-sync being the very first standard was popular for those who wanted tear free gaming. The monitors required special chip and had to certified by Nvidia. This involves cost and the price of the monitor would go up. AMD followed Nvidia and introduced freesync technology which is the effectively same thing as G-sync but was an open standard and thus no cost involved for monitor manufacturers. This led to a new price war. HDMI consortium later added a Variariable rate refresh (VRR) system in new HDMI standard effectively bringing VRR to everyone for free. The manufacturer just had to comply with the standard.
This had led to a reduction in charm of Nvidia G-sync monitors and the extra premium they command. We speculate that this is the ultimate reason that Nvidia has to accept the open standard even though they are adamant that their proprietory solution is much superior due to their stringent certification process.
