Intel to up the game in server segment with 38C/76T and 48C/96T chips in 2020
AMD has created a dent in the server segment with its multicore Zen CPUs and competitive pricing. This has resulted in some serious win for Epyc CPU be it world’s fastest supercomputer or world fastest Super Computer with CPU only. Intel is now responding to AMD’s threat and will be launching Copper Lake and Ice Lake with 14nm and 10nm manufacturing process, respectively.
New Socket
Both Copper Lake and Ice Lake will support Socket P+. The platform will support upto two sockets with upto 38 cores per socket. This means the platform can support 38C/76T and upto 76C/152T.
Copper Lake
This will be 14nm product with a TDP of upto 300W and will arrive Q2 2020. This CPU can support 48C/96T which strangely is better than its Ice Lake counterpart which is limited to 38C. The RAM support is at 8 channel DDR4 upto 3200MHz. The limiting factor is PCIE support which is limited to 64 lanes Gen 3.
Ice Lake
The 10nm behemoth is expected to arrive in Q3 2020 with TDP upto 270W. This CPU can support 38C/76T which lower than Copper Lake due to usage of less mature 10nm manufacturing process. The RAM support is at 8 channel DDR4 upto 3200MHz. The limiting factor is PCIE support newer Gen 4 with 64 lanes.
These CPUs will be competing with AMDs Epyc Rome CPUs which will support 64C/128T in single chip solutions, with dual EPYC Rome systems packing an insane 128C/256T.
As of now Intel has no answer to AMDs Epyc Rome monsters.
