Microsoft opens exFAT specifications
In an unprecedented move where Microsoft has announced not only the opening up of specification of exFAT, but is also adding support for the same in Linux kernel.
Even though exFAT file system is old and can be accessed under Linux system by using FUSE support, However, there was always a fear of being sued for accessing proprietary format.
with this move, exFAT support can be baked in by anyone with no licensing issues as wide varieties of hardware still use the exFAT support. It is to be noted that there are better flash friendly system out there including F2FS developed by Samsung and promoted by Google, but exFAT is most widely used.
