Tesla in Driver Seat for Both Hardware and Software- Buys DeepScale
On the hardware front, Tesla has already ditched AI hardware from external vendors and have designed and implemented their own hardware. Since its CEO Elon Musk’s vision to have its ambitious plan to have fully autopilot mode vehicles, this vision required a software.
In order to fulfill this dream, Tesla has now acquired the startup DeepScale which specializes in developing AI software which helps computer systems learn and decipher the images that are fed to them.
But why DeepScale? this is because DeepScale has the software process to run the AI software to run on a very low power envelope. The software only consumes 2% power on hardware which can do 30 TOPS. Tesla’s in-house SOC sports 72 TOPS. So the power consumption could be even low. This is excluding the in house optimization which can be done now since Tesla now owns both Hardware and Software.
