RISC-V Foundation may Move to Switzerland

Switzerland is known for its beautiful “open” landscapes and it may be known for one more open thing, RISC-V. According to Reuters, the non profit organization might move soon enough due to concerns from around the world.

The foundation had already clarified why the move is being made and voted for Switzerland in 2018 itself. Due to recent concerns over onging trade war between U.S.A. and China where some companies were banned for trading with USA based companies (Hint: Huawei). This has a huge implication where most of the chip designers are based in USA and any ban in this nature could jeopardize IP access continuity of RISC-V since the founders are based in Berkely.

The intention of the RISC-V Foundation, which was founded in 2015 to build an open, collaborative community of software and hardware innovators based on the RISC-V ISA. with this in regard, the RISC-V Foundation has also formed a joint collaboration with the Linux Foundation.

Thus the best move is to move out of U.S.A. so that no such restrictions can be imposed.

RISC-V has prompted development by technology giants like Alibaba who are making chips for server. In India, the design is being used to make indigenous chips for IoT to servers etc. IN fact, the competition is also facing the challenge and are going to more open route and IBM has already opened up their Power ISA.

The future does seem bright and it seems the future lies in open source.
