MediaTek Enters High End Again- Announces Dimensity 1000 5G chipset
MediaTek is making headlines today with 5G chips today, one of them was partnership with Intel and the other is the new name to it’s already in works 5G supported chip, The Dimensity 1000.
The Dimensity 1000 ticks all the checkboxes for a high end SOC
- Integrated 5G- Check
- Cortex A77- Check
- 7nm manufacturing process- Check
- AI cores- Check
- Top of the line Mali GPU- Check
CPU
The 7nm SOC has two clusters with 4X Cortex A77 @ 2.6GHz for powerlifting tasks and 4X Cortex A55 @ 2.2GHz for power saving. This is quite a change as Qualcomm, Huawei and Samsung has now opted for tri cluster structure where only one or two cores represent the power cluster with full clock speed.
GPU
The GPU is powered by ARM Mali G77 MP9 with Valhall architecture, which is the latest and greatest GPU architecture by ARM.
AI
The Surprise comes in AI segment where MeadiaTek has packed 5 core APU capable of computing 4.5 TOPS. However the cores are divided in clusters as two heavy cores, three medium cores, and one lightweight core.
Modem
The cheery on the pie is the integrated 5G modem called Helio M70 which is capable of sub 6Ghz 5G connection with downlink speeds of up to 4.7Gbps, and uplink speeds of up to 2.5Gbp. Just like Huawei’s solution, this also does not support mmWave.
The modem is also capable of dual 5G connectivity where two sims can simultaneously work under 5G. This on papers is better than Snapdragon 855 special 5G SOC but we have yet to see the 865 SOC by Qualcomm.
Camera Support
Now this is where MediaTek lags a bit as the SOC is capable of supporting single cameras up to 80MP, as well as 32MP/16MP dual camera configurations. No 108MP camera support is here folks. It also supports multi-frame video HDR, AI noise reduction. Video recording is restricted at 4K 60FPS. (No 8K support here)
Others
Wifi 6 along with Bluetooth 5.1 are supported and resolutions can go up to QHD+ screens at 90Hz, and FHD+ screens at 120Hz.
