Volvo Launches XC40 with Android Automotive
There is Android Auto and then there is Android Automotive. The difference being that Android Auto could run on any operating system used by Auto manufacturers. While Android Automotive is a full-fledged operating system which can be used by auto manufacturers.
Auto manufacturers were reluctant to use this OS as lots of data has to be shared regarding the engine and working to google which was a no no. Volkswagen has recently chimed in with this concern and has double down on its own OS for all the brands under its umbrella. However, Volvo has gone to the dark side and has launched XC40, an Electronic Vehicle with Android Automotive as its OS.
Thus no one has to tether its Android phone to start android auto. The OS can perform battery stats, AC controls, diagnostics etc. The Assistant can be invoked to modify car settings.
