AMD Officially Unveils World’s Most Powerful Desktop CPU
Launching on 25th of November 25, AMD has announced Ryzen 9 3950X with 16 cores 32 threads. But for those who want even more threads, they have also announced zen based third generation Threadripper CPUs, the 24-core 48-thread Threadripper 3960X and the 32-core 64-thread Threadripper 3970X.
But!
The catch is getting a new motherboard sTRX4 socket and TRX40 chipset for threadrippers announced above.
AMD also announced a low profile APU the Athlon 3000G with Radeon Vega graphics paired with the 12nm process and Zen+ architecture for a mere $49 which succeeds Athlon 200GE . Oh! and this one has unlocked cores for overclocking fun.
Ryzen 9 3950X
As the nomenclature suggests, this Ryzen competes with the Intel Core i9 series. Ryzen 9 has two chiplets fused with infinity fabric to get 16C/32T compared to Intel’s powerhouse Core i9 9900K with just 8C/16T. This will features a 3.5 GHz base and 4.7 GHz boost clock and will limit itself to 105W TDP, 64MB of L3 cache and 24 lanes of PCIe Gen 4.0. This will be priced at $749. The 3950X will use AM4 socket and thus is compatible with X570, X470, and B450.
Point of concern: This CPU does not come with the bundled cooling solution and a water cooled solution is recommended to be purchased separately.
Threadripper 3960X
Based on Epyc Rome CPU, The latest threadripper will exceeding perform than the previous gen threadripper and gives more cores then rival competitor (wink wink Intel). This CPU has 24 cores and 48 threads that run at a 3.8 GHz base and 4.5 GHz boost and has 140MB of the total cache. RAM support is available for quad-channel DDR4-3200.
Threadripper 3970X
The Zen 3 based behemoth of CPU has 3.7 GHz base clock and 4.5 GHz boost with 32 cores and 64 threads for $1,999 and comes with 144MB of total cache. The chip itself exposes 88 lanes of PCIe 4.0 and supports quad-channel DDR4-3200.

The Puny Athlon 3000G
It brings backs good memories and certainly has the brand recognition, but this is not the powerhouse of yesteryears. The 3000G comes with Radeon Vega graphics manufactured at 12nm process and Zen+ architecture for a mere $49. It has 2C/4T design with 1MB of L2 and 4MB of L3 cache. Power limits itself to 35W TDP with a max clock speed of 3.5 GHz. There is no boost clock but the multiplier is unlocked for overclocking pleasure.
