AMD brings Zen 2 to APU with Ryzen 4000 Renoir & Athlon- Will take on Intel’s 10nm Ice Lake
AMD has taken wraps off from its new APU based on Zen 2 cores code-named “Renoir” and it will arrive in 15W to 45W avatars. The Speculated Vega GPU is also on board.
U Series- Mobility Platform
The Ryzen 4000 family is split between mobility called U-Series and for gamers called H-Series. But Renoir is mobile-first and this shows. This brings the first 7nm parts to the mobile segment. These are 15W parts that have 4 cores to 8 cores. However, in this lineup, there are models that have SMT disabled. Surprisingly, this allows 8 cores 16 threads in 15W envelop also.
Model | Cores / Thread | Frequency | Cache | Graphic Cores | GPU Frequency | TDP |
Ryzen 7 4800U | 8 / 16 | 4.2 / 1.8 GHz | 12MB | 8 | 1750MHz | 15W |
Ryzen 7 4700U | 8 / 8 | 4.1 / 2.0 GHz | 12MB | 7 | 1600MHz | 15W |
Ryzen 5 4600U | 6 / 12 | 4.0 / 2.1 GHz | 11MB | 6 | 1500MHz | 15W |
Ryzen 5 4500U | 6 / 6 | 4.0 / 2.3 GHz | 11MB | 6 | 1500MHz | 15W |
Ryzen 3 4300U | 4 / 4 | 3.7 / 2.7 GHz | 06MB | 5 | 1400MHz | 15W |
The GPU department is still using aging Vega GPU, however, as per AMD, this is a mature and optimized part that now has 59% more performance per CU.
Performance wise, AMD compared Ryzen 7 4800U to Intel’s Ice Lake Core i7-1065G7 and claims that their chip delivers 20% lower power consumption and twice the performance per watt.
H Series- Performance Platform
The H Series biggest jump from U series is the TDP rating of 45W. There are two models, The Ryzen 7 4800H and 4600H. The Ryzen 7 4800H has 8 cores and 16-threads that operate at a 2.9 GHz base and a 4.2 GHz boost. GPU is again Vega parts with 7 CUs that run at 1600 MHz. There is also a six-core 12-thread Ryzen 5 4600H, which has a 3.0 GHz base and 4.0 GHz boost. GPU is again Vega parts with 6 CUs that run at 1500 MHz.
Model | Cores / Thread | Frequency | Cache | Graphic Cores | GPU Frequency | TDP |
Ryzen 7 4800H | 8 / 16 | 4.2 / 2.9 GHz | 12MB | 7 | 1600MHz | 45W |
Ryzen 7 4600H | 6 / 12 | 4.0 / 3.0 GHz | 11MB | 6 | 1500MHz | 45W |
AMD also has new Athlon models aimed at chromebook with Silver and Gold Models.
Model | Cores / Threads | Frequency | Cache | GPU | TDP |
Athlon Gold 3150U | 2 / 4 | 3.3 / 2.4 GHz | 5MB | Radeon | 15W |
Athlon Silver 3050U | 2 / 2 | 3.2 / 2.3 GHz | 5MB | Radeon | 15W |
