Snapdragon 6 Series get 5G Modem with SD690
Qualcomm has already enabled 5G capability in 865 SOC and 768G but the mid-range SOCs were still maxed out with 4G support. However, the 5G modem is now slowly trickling to lower-tier SOC and Qualcomm has now revealed Snapdragon 690 which has 5G and Wifi 6 support baked in. The SOC is now the most powerful 6 series SOC.
CPU
The CPU is an octa-core design with 2 powerful cores (Kryo 560 based in ARM cortex A77) clocked up to 2.0 GHz and power saving 6 core (ARM Cortex A55) configuration. The Snapdragon 690 is manufactured on Samsung’s 8nm LPP process.
Memory
This has support for 2 x 16-bit LPDDR4X memory at up to 1866MHz, with a maximum of up to 8GB RAM.
GPU
This has a new Adreno 619L GPU with support for OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 2.0 FP, Vulkan 1.1, and DirectX 12
AI
Qualcomm has brought its Hexagon Tensor Accelerator (HTA), a first for 6 series SOC. This is the 5th generation of AI engine by Qualcomm
ISP
The Spectra 355L consists of dual 14-bit ISPs bringing 4K HDR video capture to 6 series SOC. It supports up to 192MP cameras, 32MP + 16MP at 30fps in dual camera mode. Slow-motion capture is supported at up to 1080p at 240fps.
Modem
This has an integrated Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X51 5G modem-RF system, However this does not support mmWave 5G.
Wifi and Bluetooth
The latest Wi-Fi 6 support and bluetooth 5.1 is baked in with aptX support.
Display
supports Full HD+ displays with up to 120Hz refresh rates which is a first for 6 series SOC. However, at QHD+ resolution the FPS support is limited to 60 FPS.
Conclusion
This should shake up the mid tier SOC segment where 120Hz display, 5G support is unheard off. This will definitely heat the Redmi / Realme note series mobiles and Moto G’s future iteration. Who knows that the Next Pixel will go even lower with this SOC to save some money :p
