Epic Games Acquires Photoscan Asset maker Quixel- Makes all assets free to download
Epic Games has announced the acquisition of startup Quixel at its Unreal Academy London event. Epic has also announced that Quixel’s Megascans library assets available free for everyone with the Unreal Engine. Further, users who are using Megascans only with UE4, their subscriptions for 2019 will be refunded.
Quixel was already collaborating with Epic to showcase the use of photogrammetry software to create assets and use in Unreal Engine in Game Developer Conference (GDC) . the demo is embedded below.
Who are Quixel?
Quixel are 3d asset creating organisation which use their software to create realistic assets using real world objects.
For the past decade, we have traveled to every corner of the world to build Megascans, and we have created tools that help artists focus on creativity. Our mission is to scan the world and to build an ecosystem that unlocks triple-A level artistry for everyone. As part of Epic, we will not only greatly accelerate this mission, but also give back to you, our community, in ways we simply couldn’t have done on our own
Megascan?
With these methods, photos of real world objects are taken from all angles and the data is fed into an algorithm. This creates a 3d model of the real world object. The best part of Quixel megascan is that assets look very realistic with textures included and are readily usable in films, games, commercials etc.
