IBM gives Power to everyone- Opens its ISA to compete with RISC V

Joining the game, IBM has announced that it has open up its Power ISA and thus joins the league with RISC V.

With server systems fully saturated by X86 CPUs from Intel and now AMD’s competition with Epyc and with new industry rage with RISC V CPU’s, IBM has decided to head the way of open source.

IBM is no stranger to open source and its Power CPU has well instructions set available for everyone to see, it is only now that their ISA has been open which means anyone can build power CPUs without paying royalty to IBM. In addition, IBM is also opening its OpenCAPI accelerator and OpenCAPI Memory Interface variant that will be part of the upcoming power9 CPU.

Further, the Open Power project is now moved to Linux foundation to ensure full open source support.

What we believe that with recent purchase of Red Hat by IBM and opening up the ISA, IBM now can be a new formidable challenger to Intel and AMD with completely new set of.. powers.

IBM’s iconic Power CPU was part of Mac line up and PS3’s as Cell processor.
