New Snapdragon 865 Benchmark Leaks- Takes Most Powerful SOC Crown
Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 865 in its tech summit and was very vocal about being 25% more powerful than previous Flagship SOC i.e. Snapdragon 855 (not the 855+ variant). But how much does it translate to benchmarks enhancement? Well, the new leak benchmark paints a picture in this regard and this might finally make android based devices more powerful than iOS counterparts in 2020.
As seen in the embedded tweet, The synthetic benchmark called Antutu shows the standing as below:
- Snapdragon 865 – 545977
- A13 Bionic – 524814
- Snapdragon 855 Plus – 498317
This shows that in this specific benchmark, Snapdragon is definitely ahead than Apple’s A13 bionic. However, this is yet a full confirmed benchmark and real world usage may vary.
About Snapdragon 865 SOC
CPU
The Design again comes in tri cluster structure. The most powerful cluster has 1x Kryo 585 CPU which is based on Cortex A77 running at 2.84 Ghz. 1x 512KB cache.
The second cluster with middle level performance has 3x Kryo 585, but are clocking at 2.4Ghz and 3x 256KB cache.
The third lightweight cluster has 4x Kryo 385 based in Cortex A55 running at 1.8Ghz and 4x 128KB cache.
As per Qualcomm, this performs 25% faster than last year flagship
GPU
Adreno 650 handles the GPU duty. Although no clock speed and other specifications are revealed, Qualcomm states that the GPU performs 20% better and is 35% more efficient. Display support has been upgraded to UHD @ 60Hz and QHD+ @ 144Hz. High refresh rate mobiles will remain a main feature for 2020 flagship devices.
Driver Support: Snapdragon 865 also has new support for drivers that can be updated through playstore. However, this is still dependent on manufacturers to test and release the drivers for respective devices. This certainly help in fixing bugs and supporting the latest games just like Nvidia and AMD does for desktop parts.
AI
There is a new hexagon 698 with AI tensor acceleration which can perform at 15TOPS. This is a massive upgrade from last flagship which at best was limited to 7 TOPS.
Memory
The SOC supports dual type of memory with LPDDR4 support at @ 2133MHz and LPDDR5 @ 2750MHz upto 16GB.
ISP
The Spectra 480 ISP supports Single 64MP camera with Zero Shutter Lag and 200MP without ZSL. Dual camera support goes upto 25MP with Zero Shutter Lag.
Video capture tops out at 4K HDR @ 60fps, 4K @ 120 fps and 8K @ 30 fps. No 8K @ 60fps available in this flagship SOC also. All hopes go to Next year flagship. Slow-motion video capture up to 720p@960 fps (unlimited). Just like last year, HDR support and Dolby Vision is also supported as per license.
Wifi and Bluetooth
Nothing less from the latest Wifi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 is here. The Bluetooth now also has aptX Voice support. The modem is 5G ready with theoretical download and upload speeds of up to 7.5Gbps and 3.0Gbps respectively. The modem uses the latest 7nm for manufacturing. This modem single-handedly supports 2G/3G/4G/5G. Although this modem is not integrated with Snapdragon 865, this modem has to be used with SD865. This means that SD 865 is compulsorily 5G ready. This also integrates Dual SIM support with Dual 5G standby. Qualcomm has already stated that its 5G modem is not only smaller then Huawei’s implementation but supports more bands.
Snapdragon 865 has an uphill battle as now the competition has also announced the latest and greatest flagship SOC including Samsung’s Exynos 990, Huawei’s Kirin 990 and MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000. Where MediaTek dominates the chart with the world’s most powerful SOC, only time will tell which one comes on top once SD865 is fully tested.
