Intel 7nm GPU Xe Leaks
We all are hyped up for Intel’s discrete GPU and videocardz has listed 6 of them, but these are not the GPU to play games. Sorry Folks! These GPUs will be used in servers for exascale level computation.
Code Named Ponte Vecchio (named after stone bridge located in Florence, Italy), these GPUs will require Compute Express Link (CXL) to interconnect. These GPUs will be featured in new exascale supercomputer from Intel called Project Aurora which is expected to go online in 2021. The Project Aurora will also include Sapphire Rapids Xeon processors.
Ponte Vecchio will utilise Foveros packaging technology which is Intel’s new approach to heterogeneous system integration where chips are 3D stacked and allows mix and match of IP blocks with various memory and I/O elements.
For those who are wondering, Intel announced that it will enter the discrete GPU segment and has recently turned on its first GPU called DG1 with Raja Koduri teasing a 2020 launch time.
What is CXL interconnect link / bus?
It is a high-speed CPU-to-Device and CPU-to-Memory interconnect designed to accelerate data center performance. It allows high speed connection between compute units like CPU and GPU in server segment with high bandwidth.
CXL is designed to be an industry open standard interface for high-speed communications, as accelerators are increasingly used to complement CPUs in support of emerging applications such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and thus anyone can use this specification
