Ex Apple and Google Chip Designers launches Nuvia- To Bring New Server CPUs

Nuvia, a new company comprising of Ex chip designers at Apple and Google, has announced that they have raised $53 million and aim at producing new chips and CPUs for the datacenter market and disrupt the segment by producing the highest performing parts. Sounds lofty?

Well the claim will sound less lofty when we see the credible designers who are behind this project. as per the statement released:

NUVIA was founded in early 2019 with the goal of reimagining silicon design to deliver industry-leading performance and energy efficiency for the data center. The company was founded by John Bruno, Manu Gulati and Gerard Williams III, who have collectively driven system engineering and silicon design for more than 20 chips, with more than 100 patents granted to date. NUVIA’s founders bring a rich silicon design heritage, having held a diverse array of engineering leadership roles at Google, Apple, ARM, Broadcom and AMD

Now with the founders having such a great track record behind them, the expectations are certainly high. Although no details have been shared regarding CPUs base design, we can make a valid guess since all the founders have experience in making ARM chips, their server chip might comprise of custom design from ground up of ARM v8 CPUs or maybe if they aim to be even more future they might go with ARM v9.

Chip development has become a new hot bed as current technology for shrinking nodes are reaching its limits and once new startups are taking advantage of this situation and designing chips at current tech with no risk from industry behemoths like Intel. In recent times, such companies include Graphcore, Groq etc.

However, what sets apart Nuvia is the experienced people behind it which include John Bruno, Manu Gulati, and Gerard Williams III, who will be the CEO. These are the people who spearheaded Apple’s A-series CPU. Apple A-series CPUs are still the industry benchmarks when it comes to mobile design.
