Samsung Announces Flagship Exynos 990

Right on the dot, Samsung has now announced its Flagship SOC which will be part of their next Galaxy S and Note series. Dubbed as Exynos 990, the Flagship SOC will be built on the flagship fabrication process of 7nm EUV node.

As we have reported before, Samsung is unable to keep up with leading SOC manufacturers in terms of performance like Apple and Qualcomm. This new SOC with new fabrication process brings Samsung nearer to the other manufacturers. Lets see what is in store

CPU

The CPU boast Octa Core tri cluster design. This includes 4 ARM Cortex A55 cores as the power saving cluster, 2 Cortex A76 cores and the last custom cluster comprising of 2 Exynos M5. The clock speed of each cores is still unknown. Samsung portrays overall performance upliftment of 13%.

GPU

GPU task is again handled by Mali G77 GPU having 11 cores which is the latest Valhall based design from ARM sporting brand new ISA which succeeds Bifrost design. The performance upliftment is promised at 20%. Which is still far cry from Adreno and A13 Bionic. Just a side note that Samsung has licensed AMD’s Radeon GPU based on Navi architecture for mobile deployment which should come in around 2021 or later.

RAM

This should be one of the biggest jump in the new SOC which transitions from LPDDR4X memory to LPDDR5 memory which also entails an increase in the memory frequency from 2093 MHz to 2750MHz.

NPU and DSP

There is a new Neural Processing Unit and DSP which can perform AI calculations at 10 TOP/s. This is the second aspect where the performance jump is significant.

Modem

Samsung has used the same 7nm manufacturing process as the SOC and has muti band support for complete 2G to 5G support sub 6GHz frequency.

Media Decode

The SOC supports video encode and decode of 8K 30 FPS & 4K at 120FPS.

The image signal processor supports upto 6 camera sensors with total resolution support of 108MP.
