Huawei to enter Desktop PC market- ARM Motherboard Unveiled

What you do when you have expanded into telecommunication equipment, consumer electronics and smartphones. Well, you look for entering into PC market. Huawei is seeking to enter the desktop PC market with a motherboard designed for its ARM v8 CPU called Kunpeng.

Huawei could have gone through x86 desktop market but with a trade ban from USA due to USA vs China trade war, Huawei is using its homegrown CPU based on Britain based ARM. The Chips will come in four- and eight-core configuration manufactured with 7nm. Huawei is already the largest customer of TSMC’s 7nm products which is commendable as TSMC’s if sought by industry behemoths like Apple, AMD, Nvidia etc.

Specifications

The motherboard supports the PCIe 3.0 interface, six SATA 3.0 ports, and two M.2 SSD slots. Memory supports quad-channel DDR4-2400 that can go upto 64GB.

It has an embedded Ethernet controller and has four USB 3.0 and four USB 2.0 ports.

The motherboard supports dual- and quad-core CPU, however the server-focused processors can scale up to four sockets and 64 cores.

On the software side, Huawei has to rely on Linux for all the tasks. Although Microsoft is promising support for ARM and also working on enabling x86 64 emulation, the trade ban might not let Huawei fully test the OS. However, they can make the hardware Windows ready which can then be used by end users with windows OS.

There is also a possibility that Huawei will work on its own OS but that is a long shot.
