Next Gen Nvidia GPU could be 50% faster and Consume Half the Power

Nvidia is already the king of Desktop GPU with no one challenge at the high end considering Nvidia is still at 12nm of process node. However, it is confirmed that Nvidia will shift to TSMC’s and Samsung’s 7nm process node next and the performance will take another leap.

As per Taipei Times, it is reported that Ampere GPU will get 50% performance bump and will consume half the power.

This is also to be noted that Nvidia will this time distribute its fabrication to both TSMC and Samsung. Thus ensuring that there is no production shortage as TSMC’s hands are quite full. This will also relegate AMD to top spot as the top vendor to use TSMC’s 7nm node.

Even though Nvidia is lagging behind AMD in the manufacturing front as Nvidia is stuck at 12nm while AMD has moved up its full-stack to 7nm, Nvidia still remains performance and efficiency king. This shift to 7nm+ node (yes this is not the plain vanilla node AMD is using right now) could increase the performance gap more. We already have rumors that the prime focus of next gen GPU will be on improving raytracing cores more and this node shrink might give raster engine also enough boost to warrant it performance at a whole new level.

It also makes us giddy for GPUs which don’t rely on external power and can run right off PCIE power. We may see GTX 1760 in this category also. Unless Nvidia decides to go full hung ho and remain as power-hungry as of now and go full performance mode.

AMD is also getting ready with big Navi core and we are just waiting for next gen consoles to be announced so that AMD can unleash full performance desktop parts with ray tracing cores. AMD has committed to compete with full stack including the high end.
