Blender 3D to Finally Get LTS Release and Major Change in Version Numbering System
There is no doubt that Blender, the open-source 3D modeling, Animation, Sculpting, Compositing, and Whatnot software has started garnering support from Industry as a whole right after the release of Blender 2.8x and with Industry, support comes new feature request, one of them is LTS (Long Term Support) release.
The LTS Support
Its not a surprise that corporates clients demand LTS support their policy do not allow frequent updates of the full software packages. Thus not every employee can simply download and use the Blender package and it has to be routed through their IT department. An official LTS with controlled install would fit their procedures much better. LTS versions also will help to ensure that a project that started with an LTS version can be completed with the same version in a reasonable amount of time.
The Blender 2.83 Release is expected to an LTS as it will have less of new features and will be more of a bug fix release. It will be supported to two years.
Release numbering
Blender had a major release in its lifetime where there has been a major rewrite of the software. The first one was when the Blender was used for an open movie project and the latest is Blender 2.80. However, Blender still has a very low version number. This is a stark difference from Industry-standard where a full version number is bumped to represent major changes.
Thus it now decided that the version number bump cadence will be sped up with Blender 3.0 arriving in 2021. Post which the version bump will match the industry cadence with the minor release in two years and major release post 2 years thus resulting Blender 4.0 in 2023.
The release schedule till 2025 can be read more from this blog post by Blender Foundation. Also there a Blender Conference Scheduled in LA and you should check out this article if you are interested.
