Google buys Fitbit for $2.1b- Armed to kill the Competition

It’s official, Google’s parent company Alphabet has closed the deal and bought Fitbit with a hefty amount of $2.1 billion. Fitbit had declared itself up for sale in September and what a suitor they have now. But what’s the future hold?

Well we all know that Google has been struggling with its own wearable operating system to catch on with the market called Wear OS. The partial reason could be that the hardware portion has not been able to keep up with competition like Apple and Samsung. The hardware of wearables have been slow and sluggish, not to mention having poor battery.

Fitbit, on the other hand, has done wonders in fitness tracking segment thanks to their mega acquisitions like fitness coaching app developer Fitstar for $17.8 million in 2015, in 2016 Fitbit acquired assets from Pebble which almost killed the competition. But even they have yet to kindle any magic in the Smartwatch segment. Where it launched Versa which failed to capture the broad market and the Versa 2 even went further to incorporate Amazon’s Alexa

With this accusation, Google can now focus more in Wear OS with the prowess of Fitbit large hardware and software skills and we might finally have a Pixel Watch which Google has been trying to push for the past couple of years.

What is hard to digest is that Google’s hardware division is nothing to write about, their acquisitions generally fail and Fitbit acquisition might be the same. Killing the competition. Just like Fitbit did with Pebble. Karma comes to bite back. Not to mention that the competition is heating up with Xiaomi also entering the segment with big push.

But if Google is serious to compete with Apple’s Watch and Samsung Wear, then this acquision gives them the right arsenal.
